Above The Storm
On January 27th, an ice storm hit the Eastern coast of the US. These pictures are of the approach to BWI airport at about 5:00 pm. It was hard to believe that beneath the clouds we would land in a dark, foggy ice storm.

Bariloche
San Carlos de Bariloche is a world renown ski resort town in the northern lake district of Argentine Patagonia. This fairly large town (by Patagonian standards) is nestled between the Andes and lake Nahuel Huapi. It offers a range of outdoor activities year-round, and is a great place to indulge in good food, wine and chocolate.

Buenos Aires
The first and colorful pictures in this album are from the neighborhood "La Boca" which is at the entrance to a major port on the river La Plata. The neighborhood was settled primarily by Italian immigrants who used sheet metal, left over paints and spare parts to build their colorful homes.

Dawn
These pictures taken while watching the sunrise over Lago Llanquihue in Puerto Varas, Chile. Llanquihue is a native word meaning "the secret place". (Though I'm not sure how secret the third largest lake in the Americas can be.) Pto. Varas is a charming agricultural town near the Pacific coast. It was founded by German immigrants and is the second largest producer of Salmon in the world.

Dogwood in Bloom
One of my favorite things to see in the spring is the Dogwood tree in my Mother's front yard. Each April it dresses itself in large pink and white flowers. It's a beautiful display, and this year I was there to photograph it.

Favelas
Favelas are shanty-towns (self-constructed slums)that can be found throughout most of Brasil. Many have been built on the numerous hillsides/mountains within Rio. These pictures of a favela in Copacabana were taken from the roof of the South American hotel. Ironically, the favelas occupy land which provides some of the best views of the city.

FioCruz B&W-1
Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. This castle is on a former farm that sits in the northern part of the city. The foundation is run by the Brazilian ministry of health and serves as an education and research center for health, science, and technology.
