Leidseplein
The Leidseplein is a major square in central Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Lying in the southwest of the central (canal) district of Amsterdam, the Leidseplein is immediately northeast of the Singelgracht canal.
The Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. The square and the surrounding streets are full of bars, restaurants, outdoor cafes, theaters, dance clubs and the like. Street performers are often found on the square.

Winter-Spring
2d phase of "the Four Seasons" ... local style.
( interesting --to me-- that some of the Oaks appear to be fully leafed-out, and others seem to be just getting started ... even more dramatic difference near my house )

[ didn't get exact duplicates of the winter shots .... worse: Winter was taken late afternoon and Spring late morning so the light is entirely different ]

Bavaria Red Sky
There was a spectacular sunset the other day framing the Bavaria, which is a famous Munich landmark.

Information from Wikipedia:
The Bavaria statue (German just 'Bavaria') is a bronze-cast statue of a female figure representing Bavaria's "secular patron saint", the Tellus (Mater) Bavarica ("goddess of the land of Bavaria"), located at the border of the Theresienwiese in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, where the Oktoberfest takes place each September.

The statue was commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria, and the design chosen by a competition. When the architect Leo von Klenze, building the 'Ruhmeshalle' (Hall of Fame) in the background of the Bavaria, placed an order to build the statue, he thought about a Greek design, settled between an athena and an amazon. The sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler changed the design to a more romantic germanic look (no helmet, oak wreath instead of laurel wreath, bear-skin, lion and sword instead of spear). It is an allegoric personification of Bavaria's strength and glory.

The statue was built at the foundry of J.B. Stiglmair from 1844 until 1850, mainly by Stiglmair's nephew Friedrich von Miller. Since the Bavaria is one of the biggest bronze sculptures in the world, it had to be built out of four big parts and several smaller ones. It is 18.52 meters (60 ft 9 in) high and weighs about 87.36 tonnes [1] (96.2 tons).

Inside the statue, a staircase of 66 stairs allows tourists to climb to the top and view Munich from above.

winterWonderland
i suggested to someone that they re-take a (fall?) picture in each of the seasons to show the changes .... decided to do that myself. Found a place somewhat interesting and somewhat 'wild'... and took some pix. (the day after Winter Solstice '06).

Garden of the Gods
Garden of the Gods is a public park located in Colorado Springs. It contains red sandstone hogback formations, similar to the Red Rocks south of Denver. The name Colorado is said to come from the color of this sandstone.
The hogbacks, so named because they resemble the backs and spines of a pig, are ridges of sandstone whose layers are tilted. Instead of lying horizontally, some layers are even vertically oriented. Each hogback can range up to several hundred feet long, and the tallest (called The Kissing Camels) rises to a height of 320 feet tall. [1] Entrance to the park is free according to the wish of Charles Elliott Perkins, whose children donated the land to the city of Colorado Springs in 1909. It contains numerous trails for hiking, walking, mountain biking and horseback riding. One of the most popular trails, Perkins has been paved, in an effort to combat the erosion of the park's central garden caused by its numerous visitors. Because of the unusual and steep rock formations in the park, it is an attractive goal for rock climbers. Rock climbing is permitted, with annual permit obtained at the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center. The only requirements are reading the rules, having proper equipment, climbing with a "buddy", and staying on established climbing routes. Due to the sometimes unstable condition of the sandstone—particularly after a great deal of precipitation—several fatalities have occurred over the years.
Near the entrance to the park is Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site, a recreation of rustic ranch of the late 1800s. The walking tour features a restored ranch house, demonstrations of smithing and facts about Native American activity in the area, including a small recreation of a Native American campsite. Unlike Garden of the Gods, Rock Ledge Ranch charges a small entrance fee.
Also nearby is the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center, proceeds from which support the Garden of the Gods Park.
